What was the printing press?
The printing press was a mechanical device developed in mid-fifteenth century Europe that used reusable, movable metal type to reproduce written text quickly and consistently, replacing the slow, error-prone work of hand copying manuscripts. Its introduction transformed how information circulated across Europe, dramatically reducing the cost of books and enabling ideas to spread at a speed previously unimaginable. Who invented it, and where?
Johannes Gutenberg, a goldsmith and inventor from the German city of Mainz, developed his printing system during the 1440s, completing a workable press by around 1450. Gutenberg combined his skills in metalworking with careful experimentation in ink chemistry and mechanical engineering, adapting the screw mechanism of existing wine and olive presses into a device capable of applying even pressure to printed pages. His workshop in Mainz became the site where these separate innovations first came together into a single, practical system.
Was Gutenberg really first to invent movable type?
Gutenberg was not the first person in history to experiment with movable type, since Chinese printer Bi Sheng had developed ceramic movable type as early as the eleventh century, and Korean printers had produced books using metal movable type by the fourteenth century. Gutenberg's genuine achievement lay in combining durable, reusable metal type with an oil-based ink and a mechanical press suited to the Latin alphabet's relatively small character set, creating a system efficient enough to print at genuine commercial scale. This combination of innovations, rather than the underlying concept of movable type itself, was what made his press so transformative in a European context.

Gutenberg developed a hand mould that allowed precise, consistent casting of individual metal letters from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, making it possible to produce large quantities of durable, reusable type relatively quickly. Approximately one hundred and eighty copies were printed, some on paper and others on the more expensive vellum, and roughly fifty copies are known to survive today, making surviving examples extraordinarily rare and valuable.
