What is a trebuchet?
A trebuchet is a mechanical siege engine that uses a pivoting arm to hurl heavy projectiles at castle walls and fortifications, representing the most powerful weapon available to besieging armies before the arrival of gunpowder artillery. Its design converts either human muscle power or the force of a falling counterweight into the rapid acceleration of a sling, launching stones and other objects with far greater range and accuracy than earlier siege weapons could achieve. For roughly two centuries, no siege weapon in Europe or the Middle East could match its combination of destructive power and reach.

Where did the traction trebuchet originate?
The earliest trebuchets were traction machines, powered by teams of soldiers hauling ropes attached to the short end of a pivoting arm, and they first appeared in China during the Warring States period around the fourth century BC. This traction design gradually spread westward across Eurasia over the following centuries, reaching Europe by around the sixth century AD through the movement of peoples and armies across Central Asia. Though less powerful than the counterweight machines that would eventually replace them, traction trebuchets remained in use across much of the medieval world for centuries.

How did the counterweight trebuchet develop?
The far more powerful counterweight trebuchet emerged sometime around the twelfth century, most likely somewhere in the eastern Mediterranean or the Islamic Middle East, though its precise origin remains genuinely disputed among historians. This innovation replaced the pulling teams of the traction design with a massive fixed or hinged weight, dramatically increasing both the range and destructive force a single machine could deliver. Within a relatively short period, the counterweight trebuchet had become the dominant heavy siege weapon across both the Crusader states and medieval Europe.

How does a counterweight trebuchet actually work?
A counterweight trebuchet operates through a long arm pivoting on a raised axle, with a heavy weight, sometimes amounting to several tonnes, attached to the short end and a sling holding the projectile attached to the long end. When released, the falling counterweight swings the long arm rapidly upward, and the sling's extension at the moment of release adds a final, whip-like burst of acceleration to the projectile. This combination of leverage and timed release allowed even a modestly sized machine to fling stones weighing over a hundred kilograms across distances of two hundred and fifty metres or more.

What could a trebuchet actually do to a castle?
Properly built and calibrated counterweight trebuchets could steadily batter down stone fortifications that had successfully withstood earlier siege weapons and direct assault for generations. Beyond simple stone projectiles, trebuchets were also used to hurl incendiary materials, and on documented occasions the corpses of disease victims, intended to spread infection and terror among a besieged population rather than physical structural damage. Their combination of accuracy and raw destructive power made them a genuinely transformative addition to medieval siege warfare.

What role did trebuchets play during the Crusades?
Trebuchets featured prominently in major Crusader campaigns, including the prolonged Siege of Acre between 1189 and 1191, where Crusader forces deployed numerous engines against the city's fortifications, with contemporary accounts recording at least eleven machines targeting a single defensive tower. Commanders frequently gave these weapons individual names, and King Philip II of France's trebuchet known as Bad Neighbour became one of the more famous examples from this period. The scale and coordination of trebuchet use during these campaigns demonstrated how central siege engineering had become to medieval warfare by this point.

What was the Warwolf?
Warwolf was an enormous counterweight trebuchet built on the orders of King Edward I of England during the siege of Stirling Castle in 1304, reportedly requiring several master carpenters and dozens of workmen roughly three months to construct. According to tradition, the castle's defenders were so alarmed by the machine's construction that they attempted to surrender before it was ever fired, though Edward is said to have insisted on testing the weapon regardless. No detailed technical description of Warwolf's design survives today, leaving its exact scale and construction to a combination of historical record and considerable later legend.

What is the story behind the siege of Caffa and the Black Death?
During a 1346 Mongol siege of the Black Sea trading port of Caffa, the contemporary chronicler Gabriele de' Mussi claimed that Mongol forces, dying from plague within their own camp, catapulted the bodies of plague victims over the city's walls using trebuchets. Genoese ships fleeing Caffa are widely believed to have carried the resulting outbreak into the Mediterranean, contributing to the spread of the Black Death across Europe, though the precise reliability of de' Mussi's account remains a genuine subject of historical debate. Whatever its exact accuracy, the episode stands as one of history's earliest and most infamous examples of biological warfare.

How did trebuchets decline with the introduction of gunpowder?
As gunpowder artillery matured through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, cannons gradually proved capable of delivering comparable or greater destructive force with less time-consuming construction and setup, steadily displacing trebuchets as the siege weapon of choice. The transition was gradual rather than immediate, since early cannons remained expensive, unreliable, and slow to reload compared to a well-built trebuchet, allowing the two technologies to coexist on the battlefield for a considerable transitional period. By the sixteenth century, however, the trebuchet's era as a serious military weapon had effectively ended.

Did trebuchets see any use after their prime?
The trebuchet's last recorded military deployment came in 1521, when Hernán Cortés reportedly ordered one built during the siege of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan after his gunpowder supplies ran critically low, though the attempt proved unsuccessful when its first shot landed on the machine itself. Trebuchets saw at least one further recorded use centuries later, when British forces defending Gibraltar in 1779 built one to strike targets their conventional artillery could not adequately reach. These isolated later examples illustrate just how enduringly practical the basic trebuchet design remained, even long after gunpowder had rendered it generally obsolete.

Why does it deserve a card?
The trebuchet represents medieval engineering at its most ruthlessly effective, a machine capable of reducing fortifications that had withstood centuries of prior siege warfare using nothing more than timber, rope, and the simple, unstoppable force of gravity. It fought its way from ancient Chinese battlefields to the walls of Acre and Stirling, and even found grim new purpose as one of history's earliest weapons of biological warfare. Few pre-modern inventions demonstrate so clearly how the careful application of basic physics could reshape the outcome of war.
